PROPERTIES OF P.T.F.E./TEFLON

Polytetrafluoroethylene (P.T.F.E.) is a man made material possessing a remarkable range of properties. Corrossion resistant, absolutely Inert, Extremely low Coefficient of friction, Best Electrical properties.

CHEMICAL PROPERTIES

Chemical -Resistant : P. T. F. E. is not affected by any known solvents.

Non - Absorbent: Water absorption is nil, No common acid or base is absorbed by P. T. F. E. at temperatures up to 250oC (483oF).

Non-Ageing, Non Toxic, Non-Wetting, Light Stable, Hygienically Clean.

MECHANICAL PROPERTIES

Abrasion Resistant : P. T. F. E. possesses relatively good abrasion resistance.

Bearing properties : Fibre glass and Graphite reinforced P. T. F. E. is used for bearing bushes.

Very low Coefficient of friction: Comparable to wet ice on wet ice, there is never any stick-slip movement.

Non-Stick, Self lubricating.

THERMAL PROPERTIES

Wide Temperature Range : -190oC to +258oC (-374oF to 500oF).

ELECTRICAL PROPERTIES

High dielectric Strength : even at high frequencies.

Low Dielectric Constant : P. T. F. E. is one of the best of the solid Dielectrics. Its permittivity does not alter with frequency or temperature.

Low power factor : Heat Resistant : No risk of insulation failure due to Moisture.

APPLICATIONS OF P. T. F. E.

1

CHEMICAL AND PETROLEUM INDUSTRIES

As Gaskets, Sleeves, Gland Sealings and various types of PTFE seals and packings, Valves seats and seals. 'O' Rings, 'U' Rings, 'V' Rings, Lantern rings. Diaphragms, Balls, Thread Sealant Tape, Universal Rope Gaskets.

2

ELECTRICAL AND ELECTRONICS INDUSTRIES

PTFE Inserts, Connectors, Insulators, Adaptors, Beads, Bushes, Spacers for coaxial cables, Insulating tape, Sockets and Holders for Valves.

3

MEDICAL AND ORTHOPAEDIC

P. T. F. E. is non-stick, hygienic material possessing the ability to be sterilised repeatedly without deterioration. Bacteria do not grow on it and it is non-absorbent. PTFE is used as artificial bone at various body joints, as Ear plugs, In plastic surgery etc.

4

ENGINEERING INDUSTRIES

As bearings, Piston Rings for compressors, Seals for shafts, stuffing boxes, slide tracks, oil Seal rings-gaskets, Washers, Valves seats etc.

WHY USE P. T. F. E. ?

PTFE prevents corrosion and protect contamination under difficult operating conditions. PTFE components do not wear out, corrode, crack or leak as fast as other components, reduces frequency of shutdowns for repairs and the costs of day to day maintenance and eliminates need for lubrication.

Filled P.T.F.E Compositions

The characteristics of P.T.F.E in some applications can be considerably enhanced by the use of filters. PTEF can be compounded with glass fibre, carbon, graphite, coke, ceramic, Bronze, Molybdenium Di-Sulphide to increase several properties as under.

  • Resistance to deformation under load by approximately 25%
  • Resistance to wear by shafts, by as much 500 times
  • Stiffness by a factor of 2 to 3
  • Thermal conductivity by a factor of 5
  • Resistance to creep approximately twofold
  • Thermal dimensional stability by a factor of 2
  • Hardness by about 10%
  • Low coefficient of friction
  • Non-flammability
  • Excellent electrical properties (at low additive concentrations)
  • Excellent outdoor durability

We suggest that users of P.T.F.E should consult us for correct grade of filler for specific applications.
